This Week – Monday 23rd October 2017

Firstly, my apologies for being so absent recently. This has been largely due to an intensive regime of physio for my new hip which has taken up a lot of my week. It is paying off and I am pretty much back to normal (whatever that is!) Three more weeks of physio and I will be running about like a ten-year-old!

Monday Muse   Chris N has given us some very ‘Halloweeny’ topics along with a couple of great photos. I can almost hear the owls hooting along with the swish of broomsticks.

The Blog    Will be written this week by Nicola and will give us plenty to think about, I’m sure.

The Bragging Stool     Alyson won the Mags4Dorset competition – congratulations once again and great they were so prompt with the prize money!

I have scrolled through the Forums site and think this is the only brag this week so Alyson, please enjoy that comfy velvet cushion aloft! (and if I’ve left someone out, please let me know)

October Challenges    There are plenty it seems. I counted ten, so no shortage of choice, my friends. Something for everyone.

WA Magazine. Jo has sent (by email) the final proof of Issue No 7 and it looks great. She is asking everyone to look through and get back to her if any problems are spotted. The magazine will be on the agenda for Sunday’s meeting.

The Formal Meeting is this Sunday 29th October at 4pm CET and Sue will be in the chair. Please ensure your apologies are in if you can’t attend.

The Poetry Project is this Friday October 27th at 3pm.

NaNoWriMo is around the corner …any takers this year?

I am leaving you with this quote from Anton Chekhov (following on the Halloween theme perhaps!)

Don’t tell me the moon is shining

Show me the glint of light on broken glass.

Happy Writing Everyone.

This Week on WA 9th October

It seems to have been a week of quiet contemplation, mutual support and feedback, and general-behind-the-scenes writerly stuff here on WA this week.

But first of all the great news that Crilly has come through and is now recovering from her surgery with great aplomb. We’ve all been thinking of you Crilly and wish you a hasty comeback to your writing too.

The minutes for the meeting late September mention a number of issues that need further exploration - so check them out and input if you can. Especially the point about low meeting attendance.

But there’s great stuff going on too. The ‘hands’ Monday Muse brought forth a super piece from Jill, now looking for (and getting some great) feedback and a market.

As for the poetry project: Bruce is posting some thought provoking poems for all to enjoy.

And just look at the Chapters thread; getting a workout for sure. It is good to see such activity.

October’s challenges and opportunities thread has some super possibilities for all. But the thread is open to more submission openings if you know of any.

Deadline for submissions to the next edition of WA Magazine is now closed. Any stragglers?

On the bragging stool this week are the usual culprits of Ad Hoccers (as Angela has aptly named us.) Going great guns as always.

Maggie's blog on research is filled with intrigue, and the Monday Muse from Vanessa crammed with ideas to inspire and get the juices flowing. How about the proverbs then?

There have been a few tweaks to the planner. Please check your dates up to Christmas again and let yours truly know if you need to make any changes.  Still looking for a blogger for November 6th.

If I've forgotten anything, please shout.

It is Thanksgiving here in Canada today. So wishing a very happy Thanksgiving to all, from me over here.

Well this week has been a roller coaster ride on the member activity thread. Each time I log on it has all changed again. Nice to see everyone so busy.

Blog: Angela has added a blog this week about the benefits of reading to cats. Everyone seems who has replied seems to discuss or read their work to their menageries! Personally I'm cat sitting from tomorrow so will read my latest to the captive audience.

Muse: Lesley is down to add the muse.

Bragging Stool:  Angela, Sue, Chris and Laura made it on to the Ad Hoc board again last week. The next prompt is 'air'. Angela has had success with a slogan for a healthy drink - cheers, Angela. I hope the prize was good. Angela has also heard her story will be in the Stringybark anthology - congratulations. Sue has her poem published in in ArtAscent and Bruce has had a collage published in Smoky Blue Literary and Arts Magazine. Lots of successes there to keep everyone going.

October Challenges & Opportunities: I've started this forum with details of a competition to win a place at the Iceland Writers Retreat. Please add more competitions or opportunities to the list.

WA Magazine: Part of the reason the site has been so busy is with people getting last minute feedback on their pieces for the next magazine. Jo has updated the list and if your name is not crossed out she does not yet have your work! Please get it to her asap as the editors need to get to business.

If I've forgotten anyting I apologise but the rate things are moving at the moment is taking my breath away. Congratulations to trial members Susan and Bruce who have dived straight in and are trying out the site and pitching pieces for feedback.

Wishing everyone a happy and productive writing week!
