Despite everyone being busy with friends and family over the summer, last week seems to have been a productive one for members of Writers Abroad.

Blog: Laura has posted an interesting blog we can all relate to, asking questions about why and what we read, and what happens after we’ve finished a book.

Muse: Sue has some great ideas for this week, inviting us to write a humorous sketch, something from a one line prompt, something for the Ad Hoc word prompt for this week – ‘hill’, or a 40-line ballad. Take your pick.

Bragging Stool:  Congratulations go to Angela who has some hush hush news of reaching the last ten in a high-profile flash fiction competition, which I’m dying to shout out about by name, but have been sworn to secrecy! All will be revealed in the next few days, after which she can grace the bragging stool again.

All the usual suspects – Sue, Crilly, Chris N, Angela and Laura seem to be taking over the Ad Hoc site and have all been published again. Well done.

My own disappointment at getting no further than the shortlist in the I Must Be Off travel competition was slightly eased by a smaller achievement – winning a runner-up prize in the Erewash ‘books’ themed flash fiction competition.

New Forum: Sue has created a new forum called ‘How To – a guide for members’ which you can find under ‘General’. Here you will find her topic ‘Overview’. Particularly helpful in showing how to upload and post an image with a muse, or anything else. Also some help with how to post a Muse.

September Challenges & Opportunities: This topic is up and running on the forums. More ideas welcome.

WA Magazine: Jo has sent out our first newsletter to all those on our mailing list, which includes information on the publication of our seventh e-mag in November. Those of us, including myself, need to get on with writing whatever they’ve signed up for. Last call is the end of September.

Wishing everyone a happy and productive writing week!

After last weeks huge scoop of brags, this week we have news that Jill has been shortlisted in the I Must Be Off travel writing comp. This is huge and we all congratulate Jill on this success.

Today’s meeting was chaired by Chris and well attended and we swiftly moved through the agenda with some great input from all. Check the Meeting Room forum for minutes.  As a result the September challenges and opportunities thread will soon be up and running. If you have anything, please add the details.

The meeting also discussed WA Magazine submissions, the draft newsletter, and members’ visions - all in the excellent minutes.

There has been a little confusion again with the planner - Nigel will be adding a super Monday Muse for us this week and will delay posting his blog until September 11th - confusion sorted I think.

Our Poetry Project is running a challenge to write a ballad for submission to Writing Magazine deadline 15th September. Details in the Poetry Project forum.

I think that is it. If I’ve forgotten anything, just holler.

Blog: Jo has written a thought-provoking blog on giving and receiving feedback on our writing. Very helpful guidance for all of us.

Muse: Laura has posted some intriguing prompts for the Monday muse – obviously with our anthology in mind – with some first lines of stories and poems, with an international feel to them. The first one had me Googling straight away! Now I just have to get writing.

Bragging Stool:   Quite a hot seat this week, starting with Angela who had her very moving story ‘Coming Home’ published in the Amsterdam Quarterly.

Alyson, Paola and Rilla have all been shortlisted for Chris A’s Travel Essay competition (oops, we’re not supposed to know it’s them) so the odds are in favour for a WA winner. You can pop over to Chris’s MustBeOff blog and leave a comment.

Paola has yet another brag with a piece accepted by International Living, and they’re looking at two more!

And Nicola got a ‘nice’ review for her book ‘Bittersweet Blood’, though I’ve checked out the Goodreads site and she’s being extremely modest, there are plenty of glowing ones already there!

And not forgetting Dianne, at the centre of world affairs and the recent G8 summit, with her cover story in Ireland’s Own on the town of Enniskillen. Well done.

Congratulations to all!

Anthology:   Submissions are coming in, slowly but surely, from all over the world, and some WA members have already posted drafts of their submissions for critique. So, if you’ve not yet done so, take a look at the Work in Progress and the Writing Challenges forums and offer your advice.

Chapter Group:   As our latest string of novelists have completed their chapters (except Vanessa from whom we’re anxiously waiting for more!) it’s good to see Crilly has now plucked up courage to post her first chapter of ‘The 19th Block’. It’s a very intriguing opening so go over there and leave some comments.

Please add to this, anyone, if there’s something I’ve missed out.
