It has been another busy week for many members of Writers Abroad.

Voting on the magazine versus newsletter resulted in the newsletter being agreed as a way forward for now. The what and when details yet to be discussed.

Members are updating posts on their writing plans and goals; we all know that plans are ever-shifting so reviewing and updating on a regular basis is a great idea.

The February challenges and opportunities thread is being added to all the time, and Alyson has taken up the challenge to write a really tough story with a 2099 setting in an American city. What a wowzer of a challenge and what an impressive offering from Alyson. If you haven't already - check this one out.

Angela, too, has a wonderful unicorn story resulting from last week's muses. Any publishers of stories for children out there? This one is well worthy of going to print.

And take a look at Jill's 'Bend in the River' a breathtaking piece also resulting from last week's muses.

The Adhoccers are keeping up the beat as always, and it is really good to see new mum Luara back in the saddle. Great stories as always.

Speaking of which, yours truly attended a poetry and story telling event yesterday (Sunday) - reading from the Ad Hoc files is always fun. And swift too. It felt good to give them an outing.

As for this week - the muses are up thanks to Angela, Maggie's blog should be posted shortly.

Hope I've not forgotten anything - if I have, just holler. Have a good week all.

The start to 2018 has been expectedly quiet as people recover from end of year festivities. My excuse is flu, but on the positive side it has given me the opportunity to read – I'm currently on my fifth book of the year! Hopefully, back to writing soon. I’m assuming others are being more creative.

To liven things up, Jo has posted a January 6-word challenge on the site, which should help everyone get going. Some of us have already posted. It’s fun, so have a go.

She has also started a Writing Goals 2018 forum so it could be the time to have a good think about that. Stating your goals publicly can have a motivating effect.

Alyson has posted a selection of January Challenges. Take a look and add to them if you like.

The Bragging Stool is taking a breather this week. Hardly surprising, as competitions and judging slows down for the festive season. Some competitions have been moved forward in anticipation of this and some results are pending, so fingers crossed for the coming weeks if you’ve entered something. If you have anything else to brag about, publication, sales, and so on, we want to hear!

Lesley has supplied some brilliant prompts for this week’s Monday Muse, along with some inspiring photos. Laura is down for the Blog, but with a new-born baby on her hands I’m not sure how she’ll find the time to get round to this.

Have a productive writing week!

This Week – Monday 23rd October 2017

Firstly, my apologies for being so absent recently. This has been largely due to an intensive regime of physio for my new hip which has taken up a lot of my week. It is paying off and I am pretty much back to normal (whatever that is!) Three more weeks of physio and I will be running about like a ten-year-old!

Monday Muse   Chris N has given us some very ‘Halloweeny’ topics along with a couple of great photos. I can almost hear the owls hooting along with the swish of broomsticks.

The Blog    Will be written this week by Nicola and will give us plenty to think about, I’m sure.

The Bragging Stool     Alyson won the Mags4Dorset competition – congratulations once again and great they were so prompt with the prize money!

I have scrolled through the Forums site and think this is the only brag this week so Alyson, please enjoy that comfy velvet cushion aloft! (and if I’ve left someone out, please let me know)

October Challenges    There are plenty it seems. I counted ten, so no shortage of choice, my friends. Something for everyone.

WA Magazine. Jo has sent (by email) the final proof of Issue No 7 and it looks great. She is asking everyone to look through and get back to her if any problems are spotted. The magazine will be on the agenda for Sunday’s meeting.

The Formal Meeting is this Sunday 29th October at 4pm CET and Sue will be in the chair. Please ensure your apologies are in if you can’t attend.

The Poetry Project is this Friday October 27th at 3pm.

NaNoWriMo is around the corner …any takers this year?

I am leaving you with this quote from Anton Chekhov (following on the Halloween theme perhaps!)

Don’t tell me the moon is shining

Show me the glint of light on broken glass.

Happy Writing Everyone.
